FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Journalist Jina Moore Named Editor in Chief of Guernica Magazine

New York, New York (February 23, 2021)— Guernica magazine, an award-winning online magazine of global politics and art, today announced that journalist Jina Moore has been named the magazine’s newest editor-in-chief.

Ms. Moore replaces Ed Winstead, who had served in that role since 2019. Mr. Winstead, who has been with the magazine for a decade, led Guernica to record growth, doubling readership figures and expanding social media growth and reach.

For Ms. Moore, who also began with the magazine as a nonfiction editor nearly ten years ago, the role represents a homecoming of sorts. “I’m absolutely thrilled to return to Guernica. The magazine has long been a ‘true north’ for me as a reader and a writer, and my time as an editor there was such a rewarding chapter,” said Ms. Moore. “It’s hard to imagine a greater gift than the solid foundation Ed leaves behind, and I’m grateful to the board and the editorial team for entrusting me with the next phase of growth at such a needed institution.”

A narrative journalist who has reported from more than 30 countries, Ms. Moore was previously the East Africa bureau chief for The New York Times and inaugurated global women’s rights coverage for BuzzFeed News. She began her career at The Christian Science Monitor.

Ms. Moore will reinvigorate the magazine’s global outlook, expand its cultural coverage, and experiment with storytelling across Guernica’s social platforms. “I want to do more of what Guernica does — bringing new and needed perspectives and voices into the political and cultural conversations that shape our world,” she said. “Together with the board, I’m fiercely committed to ensuring that Guernica embodies the diversity at the heart of its editorial outlook.”

Run entirely by volunteers, since its founding in 2004 Guernica has published memoir, reportage, interviews, commentary, poetry, fiction, and multimedia journalism by emerging and established writers from around the world. “Jina’s contributed so much to Guernica, and journalism as a whole, over the last decade,” said Michael Archer, its founding editor and president of the board. “Along with immense talent and experience, she brings exceptional integrity and vision, assets that will help strengthen and expand on the tremendous work Ed has done during his tenure.”
